An auditor is an accountant who deals primarily with financial statements. They ensure the accuracy of money coming in and money going out of an organization.

IRS and Government auditors examine things purely from a tax perspective. When a business or individual's tax return is suspect, auditors are responsible for conducting a tax audit on the business or individual to really track down where the money is going.

If a business is claiming a lot of expenses, the IRS auditor will verify these expenses. It’s one of those jobs that get a bad rap from the public, but some people do try to cheat the government out of its money.
