It's often taught in sales training that the fortune is in the follow-up and the same is true when looking for a job.

90% of the competition are all doing the same basic things...

A person needs to do something different - something that will get them noticed!

That is why I recommend cold calling and job search together. It is a job search technique that can expose the hidden job market.

Many of the job announcements seen in the newspapers & online are announced within the organization prior to its public release. That is why networking is still the most effective tool for looking for a job.

It is so simple to use cold calling with your job search that it will blow you away.

Let's get started...

First, you need to do your RESEARCH! What do I mean by research?

If you have a company, business, or organization that you are interested in working for then research it!

Use a FREE list of job search engines to start researching businesses & organizations for your new JOB!

The above sites are a good place to start your cold calling and job search. However, you may also want to use the public library and the phone book.

Things you want to research:

  • What kind of job announcements do they have open?
  • Do they list any points-of-contact? Name, Phone #, Email, etc.
  • Is the business expanding? Restructuring? #1 in its class? etc.
  • What is its vision statement? Mission statement? Core values? Goals?

Your research pays off when you can talk intelligently about the company, its mission, values, and goals.

The key is to gather information about the organization especially a Point of Contact, preferably someone from the Human Resources (HR) department or a hiring manager.

Once you've got a point of contact and you're comfortable with the information you've gathered it's time to make that call!

Here is an example of how to make a cold calling and job search call:

Secretary: Hello, XYZ Products Unlimited. How may I direct your call?

John: Good Morning, this is John Smith and I'd like to speak with Mary Wagner please.(John has identified himself up front putting the secretary at ease and establishes a relationship)

Mary: Hello, this is Mary, can I help you?

John: Hi Mary, John Smith here. I understand that you are the HR contact for XYZ Products Unlimited. Is that correct?

Mary: Yes.

John: Mary, I understand that you're a busy person and I don't want to take up a lot of your time. Do you have a couple of minutes to speak with me?

Mary: Yes, I suppose I have a couple of minutes.

Are you currently hiring for any positions at this time?

Mary: No, however, we will be having some openings in the next few months.

BINGO! John's cold calling and job search technique is paying off. No openings right now, but there will be.

John: Mary, I thank you for your time and would like to send you my resume for your review. Is there a particular format you prefer resumes to be in?

Mary: No - just make sure it covers your knowledge, skills, & training.

John: Mary, is there anything in particular that you look for in a resume when hiring someone to be a member of your team?

Mary: Why yes. We look for people who have experience in managing teams, who can handle conflict, and can motivate people.

John: Great - (if possible, hand deliver your resume to your contact) I'd like to bring my resume to you on Tuesday at 11:00 or would Wednesday be better for you?
