Prior to preparing your own resume you need to do a few things:
  • What job are you applying for? The "job title."

Step 1. Information gathering
  • List of employers (if any), addresses, dates of employment, supervisor names, phone #'s, & job titles held.
  • Diplomas, certificates, and any training applicable to the position you're applying for (location of schools, training, dates, and credit hours or length of time in wks).
  • References: names, addresses, & phone #'s.
Some of the information collected will be used to write a free resume, while some it will be used for applications, which many employers are having candidates fill out prior to employment.

Step 2. Contact information

Reviewing a good outline of a resume will show you the basics of what you need to include in a resume. Follow the example outlined to list your contact information. Make sure you use a phone number that is reliable. If you don't have one get a cell phone with nationwide coverage.

You don't want to miss the important interview call!

Step 3. Decide on a resume format

Resources are available on this website to help you determine which resume format to use (Chronological, Functional, or Combination).

Step 4. Choosing a resume template

There is some debate on whether or not to use a template when creating a resume.

I recommend using them. Why?

They give your resume a consistent appearance, they save time, and most are fully customizable allowing you the freedom to change them to "fit your needs."

Step 5. Content...

By now you should be ready to write a free resume.

You have a good idea of the structure and most of the information needed has been gathered.

So...

Below your contact information you're going to want to add an "objective". The objective tells the employer what job or position you are applying for:

Objective: Seeking a position as an armed security guard for Pinkerton Services"

Using an objective is optional, however, it is usually a good idea to be specific when writing your resume.

If you decide not to use an objective then use either a "Career Summary" or "Professional Experience" block highlighting your skills & accomplishments in a short paragraph. Tailor them to the employer's needs!

Follow-up with filling in the rest of your resume by using the resources on this website!

You'll want to list your education, work experience, and other information like special skills, training, or certifications you may have that are applicable to the job.

Finally, after you write a free resume make sure you have someone read it over for you to get a fair evaluation of it.
